The conference is held in the following activity forms:

a) Keynote speakers at the plenary sessions (duration 45-60 minutes),

b) presentations in the thematic sections (duration 20 minutes),

c) presentations and discussions in thematic symposia (certain research groups or the authors of books etc could present as a joint group at the symposium),

d) workshops, roundtable discussions,

e) presentations of teaching materials (textbooks, notes, CD-ROMs, etc),

f) concerts, excursions.

The following six thematic sections the working language of which will be English and Estonian have been planned:

1) Music in the school culture.

The presentations basing on sociological research and corresponding empirical data in this section will focus on musical activities (singing in choirs, making music in bands, etc) as well as on the status of music education as a study subject in general schools and other educational institutions. What is the pupils and teachers attitude towards the existing music education? What is expected from music education? How is music as a school study subject represented in the consciousness of pupils and teachers? What is the meaning of music as such for the development of school culture in different countries? Which knowledge and skills in music do pupils have? What kind of musical activities do the pupils prefer at school and which they are not seriously interested in? The presentations describing, analysing and comparing studies of corresponding aspects in different countries and cultures are especially waited in the present section.

2) Didactic culture in the music lessons at school

Presentations describing and analysing subjective theories of learning and teaching of music teachers in different countries will be discussed in this section. How does an ordinary music lesson look like? Which didactic models and modes of thinking do music teachers base in their work? What kind of teaching strategies and ideas in any field of topic do teacher offer/use? The history of music as a didactical reality. Teaching styles of music teachers and the pupils’ learning styles of music. The aspect of knowledge integration at the music lesson (music in connection with art, literature, mathematics etc). Tradition and innovation in music education. Presentations may be either scientifical or practical, i.e. theoretical analyses as well as descriptions and analyses of ideas and their realizations basing on teachers’ own experience.

3) Study materials/literature in music and music education, music education as the symbol of culture

The analyses and presentations of study materials/literature in different countries (contemporary as well as used in the past). Theory of a human, learning theory and knowledge theory in the textbooks of music and in cultural reality. The textbook as the semiotic sign and the symbol of culture. Reflections of modernism and post-modern in the reality of the present-day music education (at school as well as outside of school).

4) Music in young people’s life style and out-of-school world

Presentations/studies analysing the musical activities and interests of the youth among their other everyday activities and interests. What kind of music and why do the young people listen to? What and why is valued in music? Which aspects of music melody, rhythm, harmony, etc) do the young people, foremost, notice? What role does music have in the development of different youth cultures? Which music styles are preferred? Music as a factor integrating the youth’s world at school and outside the school. Music as a mean of transmitting interaction among the youth of different cultures.

5) Music and the educational culture at home

The role of music in the family and at home. Traditions and possible ways to make music at home. Music as a part of the educational culture. Folk music and the educational culture at home. Musical rituals in everyday life.

6) Music and personality development

The influence of music on cognitive, emotional and motoric development of an individual. Possibilities of music therapy to influence the development of an individual. Music and ethical development. The influence of music on development of an individual during his/her different periods of life. Music and learning as a play. Making music of the aged people as a phenomenon. Music and an individual’s consciousness of time and space.
